William “Bill” Andrew Nelson, 70, of Princeton, IL, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL.
Bill, or “Billy” to those who knew him for many years, was born on January 21, 1956, the son of William “Bill” and Ramona (Davis) Nelson. He was a graduate of Princeton High School, Class of 1974. Bill went on to further his education at Carthage College and later received his master’s degree from Benedictine University in 1986.
Bill married Dorothy Miller on May 3, 1986, at the First United Methodist Church in Princeton. The two met while performing in a local play, where their characters fell in love—and, as it turned out, so did they. Bill and Dorothy shared 40 years of marriage before his passing.
Bill worked at his parents’ business, Nelson Drug Store, from the time he was old enough to work. Although he held a few jobs along the way, including positions at J.C. Whitney, OfficeMax, and WZOE, he ultimately returned to Nelson Drug Store, where he retired as manager in 2019. In retirement, Bill worked at the Bureau County Senior Center.
Bill was always willing to lend his time and talents to the community and people he cared about. He served in many capacities with the Homestead Festival in Princeton over the years, ultimately serving on the steering committee. He also organized concerts featuring local talent to benefit the Prairie Arts Center and Gateway Services.
When his daughter, Salena, was growing up, Bill volunteered as a T-ball and soccer coach and participated in numerous school activities. He even chaired the Prom Committee.
Bill never met a stranger and seemed to know everyone. His outgoing personality, generous spirit, and love for his community touched countless lives. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bill is survived by the love of his life, Dorothy Nelson of Princeton; his daughter, Salena (Stephen) Huesing of Georgetown, KY; two grandchildren, Shepard and Sylvie Huesing; three siblings, Karen (John) Criner of Rockford, Connie (Rich) Miles of Putnam, and Eric (Brenda Sloan) of Princeton, IL; along with many nieces and nephews, to whom he was very close.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dale Nelson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded.
