Walter E. Hasbrook, 85, of Sheffield, Illinois passed away on October 2, 2021, at Aperion Care after a courageous battle with the effects of a stroke in 2016.

He was born the only child to Earl and Rose (Hamilton) Hasbrook in Kewanee, Illinois on August 13, 1936.

He attended Sheffield Grade School and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1954. He was a talented athlete, competing in basketball, track, and cross country. After graduation, he decided he wanted to be a lifetime farmer. He married Joyce Speakman, the love of his life, his best friend, his soulmate, and his caregiver, on June 3, 1956 at the First United Church of Christ in Sheffield. They celebrated 65 wonderful years together.

He spent his entire life on the family farm which was established in 1854. He was a very quiet man who loved the land with all his heart and was happiest when going to the field to plant or harvest a crop. He was a true example of a loving husband, father, and grandfather, always putting his family first. His hobbies were snowmobiling and going to the Northwoods of Wisconsin with family and friends each winter. He loved country music, the Grand Ole Opry and anything country. He always enjoyed going to all the children and grandchildren’s school activities – sports, band, cheerleading, etc. He was an avid Cubs, Bears, and Bulls fan, watching their games with his sons. His favorite attire was blue jeans and flannel shirts.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce, and their four children, Terry (Jackie) Hasbrook - Sheffield, Randy (Deb) Hasbrook - Sheffield, Lori (Mitch) Doty - Mt. Dora, Florida, and Tim (Melanie) Hasbrook - Princeton; Twelve grandchildren: Kristen (Jacob) King, Jason (Mandy) Hasbrook, Taryn (Eric) Grieff, Lauren (Calvin) Fehr, Ben (Brandi) Doty, Justin (Nicole) Doty, Courtney (Philip) Przybyla, Jordan Muzzarelli, Haley Adams, Alex Adams, Collin Hasbrook, and Cole Adams; Four step-granddaughters: Ashley Weber, Chrissy (Nathan) Shepard, Sydney (Levi) Faletti, and Kaylyn Weber; and seventeen great grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, and one granddaughter, Meghann Hasbrook.

Cremation rights have been accorded. There will be a private family graveside service at a later date. Donations can be made to the Sheffield Rescue or the First United Church of Christ. Online condolences may be sent to www.grant-johnsonfh.com.

"Just a farmer," you said,

and I laughed cause I knew

all the things that farmers must be able to do.

They must study the land then watch the sky

and figure just when it's the right time and why,

to sow and to plant, to buy and to sell,

to go to the market with cattle and, well…

You know the books that farmers must keep

to pay all the taxes and be able to sleep.

And you know the fixin' that farmers must do

when machines like mad monsters

blow a gasket or two.

So when God needed folks

to care for his earth,

he chose, "just farmers"

cause he knew their true worth.
