Sue “Susie” Arteberry passed away peacefully at home in Princeton, Illinois, on May 20, 2026, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was 64 years old.

Susie was born on May 16, 1962, in Princeton, Illinois, to Glen Anderson and Phyllis Mecum. She lived her life joyfully — leaving an unforgettable impression on everyone lucky enough to know her.

She is survived by the love of her life, her husband Steve Arteberry; her beloved daughter Brittney Kalina and son-in-law Eric Kalina; her sister Tammy Koch and husband Dave Koch; her brothers Robert Mecum and wife Lexi Mecum, and Chuck Mecum; father-in-law Dale Arteberry and wife Delores Arteberry; mother-in-law Carol Arteberry; brother-in-law Keith Arteberry and wife Tara Arteberry; sister-in-law Julie Stark; several nieces, nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind the many people whose lives were brighter because of her humor, generosity, and larger-than-life spirit, as well as her beloved cats, Sissy and Sophie.

She was preceded in death by her mother Phyllis Mecum; her father Glen Anderson; her grandparents Bertha and Lynn Girard; and her brother-in-law Brian Arteberry.

Susie was known throughout the community for her years as a server, most especially at Pizza Hut, where she turned every shift into “dinner and a show.” Known there by many as “Crazy Susie,” she made people laugh everywhere she went with her quick wit, infectious laughter, and unforgettable personality. Whether you knew her for five minutes or fifty years, chances are you walked away smiling.

Her greatest joy was spending time with the people she loved, especially traveling with Steve to Arizona to visit Brittney, Eric, and her grandpuppy Rio. Susie never turned down an adventure. From swimming with dolphins and ziplining to parasailing and hot air balloon rides, she embraced life fearlessly and fully. She had a beautiful, boisterous spirit, the biggest heart, and a smile that could light up any room.

Susie was taken far too soon, but the joy, laughter, and love she gave so freely will live on in the stories shared by those who loved her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In accordance with her wishes, no services will be held. Cremation Rites have been accorded.

    • She was a great person, and fun to be around. She trained me as a waitress in 1982 at Princeton Motor Lodge. She could always make you laugh.

  4. The world will not be the same without this amazing woman. There was a time in my life that I don\’t know what I would have done without her love and support. She was there for me during some of my hardest times. My love, prayers, and deepest sympathy go out to Steve, their beautiful daughter, and all her family and friends. Susie was loved by all, to know her was to love her. She had that bigger than life personality that lit up a room, and a beautiful caring, giving soul to go with it. She will be greatly missed by all. I love you, Susie, until we meet again, my dear friend. RIP. ❤️

  5. Susie was a “Life Long Friend” We grew up together a few houses apart from one another. Susie was in my brother’s class. She ALWAYS had a smile on her face, and if you were having a bad day, by the time you were done talking with her, you were sure to be laughing. Susie was married to the “Love of Her Life” and were ALWAYS together no matter where they were. She was so proud to be the Mother of beautiful girl, Brittany. Whenever we got to see each other, she would talk about her baby girl and how she grew up so fast and moved away to Arizona to make lasting memories of her new life as an adult. Time gets away from all of us busy in our own lives, work, raising kids, etc…..
When Susie and Steve stopped in to talk to me, she told me about her brain cancer 😢 my heart sank. I am SO SORRY Steve, Brittany, and rest of the family for the loss of “Love of Your Life, Mother, Sister, and Aunt” Susie will be remembered for her Laughter and Infectious Smile. She had such a good heart and will be greatly missed.
