Philip Jerome Sharkey

April 14, 1936 ~ September 4, 2016
Philip Jerome Sharkey, age 80, of Miami, Florida, died on Sunday, September 4, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois of pancreatic cancer. On his 80th birthday, a toast was written that summarizes Phil''s life. It was his wish to share this upon his death. A TOAST TO EIGHTY 80 years ago the prince of Toulon was born... Philip Jerome Sharkey from the land of soy beans and corn. Cousins and friends filled his days....An idyllic childhood in so many ways. The pride and joy of his mom and dad, they had big plans for this Toulon lad. They sent him to Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie de Chien. Sent him to the Jesuits to shape this teen. He then headed west to attend Regis College. Graduating four years later, his head full of knowledge. Did his degree translate into dollars? You do want to hear. He thought maybe teaching would be his career. It was by chance in a psych 101 class, he caught the eye of a beautiful lass. He asked Elizabeth Mills to be his wife…The best decision Phil ever made in his life. In no time at all their family did grow. Meg, David and Lucy came right in a row. A new career in sales and then personnel, led Phil to Miami where this family would dwell. They settled into 8235, a happy and full life on 150th Drive. A man driven by hard work, faith and integrity, his family came first, always leading with dignity. Known for his booming voice and strong convictions, his love of his friends and family traditions. We honor the birthday of his 80th year…A cause for celebration and great cheer. To Dad/Grandpa/Phil, let''s make a toast and say, you made a difference in our lives each and every day! Phil was predeceased by his parents, David and Lucy Sharkey, and his sister, Mary Raffel. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth, his three children, Meg (Don) Spence, David (Leslie) Sharkey, and Lucy Sharkey and grandchildren, David (Rachel) Spence, Clare Spence and David Sharkey.
Phil was my 1st cousin but also a big brother figure – so full of life and opinions based on deep convictions. Honorable, open, genuine are some Phil-words. I could never repay Phil for his devotion to my own parents over the years. He really is Prince Phil.
Rest in peace Good Friend
Phil must have been a heck of a man to have grandchildren like his. That doesn’t happen by accident or luck. Truly a job well done. Our prayers are with him and his family.
Marist Football
It was my pleasure & honor to be (Chicago & Florida) neighbors with Phil and family.
A very special Gentleman.
May you rest in peace & forever be in our hearts
I met Phil only a couple times and immediately knew he was a really great guy…I just wish I could have known him even better…comforting words are so difficult at this very sad time…so I just want to say that our heartfelt sympathy and loving prayers go out to Liz and all her loving family and freinds. (And… especially to my good friend Lucy)…May Phil’s loving soul rest in peace.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you, and may your faith guide your mourning.
