Melva M. Carpenter, 87, of Princeton, formerly of Manlius, died at 3:35 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Colonial Rehab and Nursing Center in Princeton. Born Aug. 28, 1923, in New Bedford to Roland and Maud (Hamilton) Lathrop, she married Clifton L. Carpenter June 10, 1942, in New Bedford. He died May 9, 2000. She was a 1941 graduate of Walnut High School. She worked at Josten''s in Princeton and Harper-Wyman in Princeton, retiring in 1986. She was a lifetime member of the New Bedford Christian Church in New Bedford. Surviving are three sons, Kent (Anita) Carpenter of Manlius, Kevin Carpenter of Princeton and Keith (Anita) Carpenter of Annawan; one daughter, Karla Gearhart of Princeton; one brother, Lester (Judy) Lathrop of New Bedford; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Norma Morris; and one infant brother. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the New Bedford Christian Church, New Bedford, with the Rev. David Beebe officiating. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Princeton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the New Bedford Christian Church in New Bedford.
