Marvin Donald Smith

Marvin Donald Smith Sr., 65, of Castleton passed away Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at 5:05 a.m. at Proctor Hospital in Peoria, Ill. He was born in Peoria on Dec. 4, 1946, one of 14 children of Arthur and Catherine (Lampher) Smith of East Peoria. He married Susan Kay Frye in 1967 at the Community Church in Matherville. Marvin was a graduate of East Peoria High School and Illinois Central College. He was employed by Freimuth and Son of Peoria for 22 years, Ulrich Industries for seven years and Kendall Construction of Dunlap for five years. He enjoyed his family, woodworking and outdoor activities. He was a servant of the Lord and loved his church. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bradford. Marvin was a volunteer radio dispatcher of the Bradford Rescue squad, helped build the Bradford Baptist Church and helped establish the Kyle Smith Memorial Park in Castleton. His wife, Susan, of 44 years survives. Also surviving are three children, Marvin "Bo" Smith Jr. of Castleton, Marla (Jerry) Graham of LaMoille, Ill., and Carlotta (Bryan) Foster of LaFayette; 10 brothers and sisters; and 13 grandchildren. He was the lifelong friend of Bobby Brown and Mary Jason. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, two sisters and a grandson. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Bradford at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Tom Doyle officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at First Baptist Church of Bradford. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Wyoming, Ill. Memorials may be directed to Kyle Smith Memorial Park. Special thanks to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Dr. Patrick Wyffles and the doctors, nurses and staff at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.
