John Eldon Allen, 73, of Wyanet passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at Perry Memorial Hospital with his loving wife and daughter by his side. John was born Sept. 11, 1936, on a cotton sack in a cotton field in Seminary, Miss., to Oris and Susie (Perry) Allen. He married Virginia L. Kratz on Aug. 4, 1956, at Dyess Air Force Base Chapel in Abilene, Texas. She survives. After being a sharecropper for most of his youth, he joined the Air Force Nov. 1, 1955. While in the Air Force he was stationed in places such as Guam and Thoulie, Greenland, before being honorably discharged 1959. He also served three years in the reserves. He farmed in places such as Triumph, Yorkville, Big Rock, Princeton and Wyanet, Ill. He joined LCN, a division of Ingersol-Rand, and retired from there in the year 2000. Survivors include his wife; a son, John V. (Connie) Allen of Gaastra, Mich.; a daughter, Susan V. (Andy) Coble of Wyanet; a granddaughter, Brandie L. (Nick) Johnson of Crystal Falls, Mich.; grandsons, Jason J. (Shana) Allen of Ladd and Jeremy J. (Katie) Allen of Malden; great-grandchildren, Amya Johnson, Aiden Johnson, Brent Nearhing, Scott Nearhing and Sam Nearhing; brothers Herman Allen and Jim Allen of Collins, Miss.; and a very good friend, Kenny Berryman. He was preceded death by his parents; sisters Lucille Culpepper and Betty Allen; brothers Teddy Ray Allen and Jake Allen; and one son, James Lee Allen. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Grant-Johnson Funeral Home in Wyanet. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. with Father Jeffery Stirniman officiating. A burial Mass will be celebrated at later date. Memorials may be directed to the Catholic Social Services or the family.
