Howard K. Hjertstedt, 97, of Sheffield, Illinois passed away Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Aperion Care Nursing Home, Princeton.

 He was born March 1, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois the son of Harold Robert and Lillian (Wolf) Hjertstedt.

 He married Grace Hamrick July 12, 1952 at the Wyanet Congregational Church. She preceded him in death August 28, 2019.

 He is survived by three daughters: Martha Bowyer of Princeton, IL, Ruth (Jim) Draper of Sheffield, IL, and Jane (Roy) Yarrington of Princeton; one son, Bill (Angelika Thompson) Hjertstedt of Princeton; 6 grandchildren: Tiffany Bowyer of Pleasant Prairie, WI, Keli (Jensen) Pinter of Princeton, Megan (Dustin) Brown of Princeton, Nicole Yarrington of Princeton, Kesielyn Hjertstedt of Princeton, and Koel Hjertstedt of Princeton; 4 step-grandchildren: Troy (Gina) Romagnoli of Princeton, Todd (Michelle) Romagnoli of Palm City, FL, Tami (Tom) Johns of Waukesha, WI, and Tiah (Danny) Wingate of Creston, OH; and 17 great-grandchildren.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Grace, two brothers, Harold Robert Hursted and Allen Iriving Hjertstedt.

 Howard graduated from Lane Tech in Chicago.

 He served in the United States Navy during WWII in the South Pacific.

 After he returned from the war he worked as a farmhand in the Kasbeer area. He farmed on his own in the Sheffield area shortly after getting married to Grace.  

 Howard was a member of the Community Bible Church where he was on the board and treasurer for many years. He was on the Bureau Service Board and Gold Township Board. He enjoyed travelling and took family vacations every year.

 A visitation will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 10:00 - 12:00 noon at Grant-Johnson Funeral Home, Princeton, Illinois. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 12:00 noon at Grant-Johnson Funeral Home, Princeton, Illinois with Pastor Fred Laughlin officiating. Burial will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery, Wyanet. Memorials may be directed to the Community Bible Church, Wyanet or the Sheffield Rescue Squad.
