Gerald P. Horton, 82, of Ashton died at 1:45 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2012, at the Franklin Grove Nursing Home in Franklin Grove. Born Sept. 17, 1929, in Buda to Andrew and Gertrude (Philhower) Horton, he married Elizabeth Ann Reid June 20, 1953, in Sheffield. She survives. He was a 1947 graduate of Buda High School. He retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1989. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Roscoe. He served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist 3rd class on the USS Missouri. He received the Korean service medal, United Nation Medal and the Navy occupation (European Clasp) Medal. Also surviving are one brother, Lloyd (Ann) Horton of Tularosa, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leslie, Floyd and Max Horton; and one sister, Elizabeth Horton. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hopeland Cenmetery, Buda, with the Rev. Jack Briggs officiating. Burial will be in Hopeland Cemetery with military rites conducted by Buda American Legion Post 261. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grant-Johnson Funeral Home, Princeton. Memorials may be directed to Ashton Fire & Rescue.
