Eugene Charles Schlindwein Sr., 85, of Sheffield died at 2:35 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City. He was born Jan. 28, 1933, in Kewanee, the son of Edward and Celia (Daly) Schlindwein. He married Peggy Ann Schwigen Nov. 8, 1952, in Kewanee. She died Jan. 22, 2018. He was a union carpenter. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church in Princeton. Surviving are son, Mark Schlindwein of Princeton; three grandchildren, Luke (Lauren) Schlindwein of Lacon, Marie (Cory Buchanan) Johnson of Burlington, Iowa, and Matthew Schlindwein of Princeton; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Dorothy Williams; a son, Eugene Charles Schlindwein Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Heather and April Schlindwein; six brothers; and one sister. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Princeton with Father Daniel Gifford officiating. Inurnment will be in Oakland Cemetery in Princeton. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 21, at the Grant-Johnson Funeral Home in Princeton. Memorials may be directed to the family of Eugene Charles Schlindwein Sr.

My belated thoughts and prayers are offered to the family and friends of Gene. He is a dear friend who will remain in my thoughts as one of the kindest friends I have ever had. I wish I had known sooner, if only to attend.
