Esther DeVos, 87, lately of Princeton, formerly of Sheffield, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Walnut Manor Nursing Home in Walnut. Born April 2, 1924, in Libertyville the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Ray, she married Peter DeVos Jan. 14, 1944. He died in 1993. She graduated from Sheffield High School. She and her husband farmed in the area until 1989 when they retired to live in Sheffield. She was an active member of St. Patrick''s Church, participating in the altar guild and food drives. She was an accomplished seamstress, quilter and gardener. Surviving are one son, Terry of Brundage, Ala.; four daughters, Harriette (David) Gillespie of Princeton, Mary Lou Kerner of Annawan, Charlotte (Vernon) Kerner of Gregory, S. D., and Jeannette (Dwaine) Shaw of Annawan; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Harriet Primo of Sheffield, Ellie (Ivan) Mark of Sheffield, Catherine Mauck of Mt. Vernon and Cynthia (Larry) Dowdell of Yuma, Ariz. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and one sister; two brothers-in-law, Tilio Primo and Ronald Mauck; one grandson, Joshua Shaw; one son-in-law, Joseph Kerner; and one daughter-in-law, Juli DeVos. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick''s Church, Sheffield, with Father Paul Meismer, formerly of St. Patrick''s, and Father Sebastian officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick''s Catholic Cemetery, Sheffield. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at church. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick''s Catholic Church in Sheffield.
