Charles Louis Krager, 104, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009. Charles was born on a farm near Manlius, Ill., on May 6, 1905. His parents were Amos and Emma Krager. His grandparents immigrated from Germany and settled in the Manlius area. He walked about a quarter of a mile to a little country school house. He drove a horse and buggy to the Manlius High School where he graduated. He and his sister, Grace, bought his first car and he went to a business school in Peoria, Ill. He was then employed in the Amboy Bank. During that time, he met Elizabeth Blair at a church youth activity, and “nailed” her with a snowball. They were married Nov. 29, 1928. Charles and Elizabeth had four children: Don, Jean, Ethel and Danny. They moved to the farm where Charles was born and lived with Charles'' parents, helping them with farming and gardening for 14 years. They moved to a farm north east of Princeton, took a break from farming for a few years when they lived in Princeton, then went back to farming near Wyanet. They retired in Wyanet. His wife Elizabeth died on June 27, 1989, after 60 years of marriage. A year later Charles married Eunice Kunkel on his 85th birthday. They had almost 10 years together before she died. Shortly thereafter Charles moved to the Amboy Rehabilitation and Nursing Center where he lived to celebrate his 104th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, four siblings, two wives, one son (Don) and one daughter (Ethel). He will be missed by his two remaining children, Dan Krager of Olney, Ill., and his daughter, Jean Ekblad of Grantsburg, Wis.; one daughter-in-law, Jackie Krager of Amboy, Ill.; one son-in-law, Bud Fix of Castro Valley, Calif.; and 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. The family is rejoicing that he is now with His Savior, Jesus Christ, whom Charles trusted had died for him, shed His blood as payment for his sins, and rose again to give him eternal life. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Manlius with Pastor Marlon Mielke officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Manlius Cemetery, Manlius. Memorials may be directed to Amboy Rehabilitation and Nursing Home.
