Resided in: Spokane, WA

Charles Lee Helle, affectionately known as Lee, passed away on September 16th, 2024, in Spokane, Washington.

Born on February 1, 1935, in Kewanee, Illinois to Don Helle and Geraldine McCluen. Lee grew up in Tiskilwa, Illinois where, starting at a young age, he worked in the family sawmill. This gave Lee the strong work ethic that he was known for his entire life.

After a few youthful “scrapes,” Lee enlisted in the US Army. Lee proudly served his country for 25 years and retired as a Sargent First Class. His service included two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded a Bronze Star for Valor and a Gallantry Cross with a Silver Star.

After the Army, Lee retired to Spokane, Washington, where he opened Chief, a popular “junk store”. Chief allowed him to pursue his passions for collecting antiques and “horse trading”.

As much as he loved running his business, Lee’s heart was in British Columbia and he eventually closed Chief to spend more time there at his family’s property and cabin. There he pursued his love of the great outdoors and spent more time with his stepfather and best friend, Jess Koenig.

Everyone who knew Lee knows he loved to tell stories – most of which were true! He had a quick wit, a warm smile, and a generous heart that made him a cherished friend and family member. His surviving children, Jerry Helle, Teresa Sauther, Roberta Starkey, Kendra

Stephenson and Shawn Schmidt, are deeply saddened by his passing but take comfort in the many happy memories they shared with him.

A celebration of Lee’s life will be held on November 9, 2024, at 2pm at the Mt. Bloom Cemetery in Tiskilwa, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Tiskilwa Historical Society.

Though Lee may be gone, his spirit and legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him. Rest in peace, Lee.
