Charles Henry White, 87, of Buda died at 9:57 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at his home. Services will be Nov. 14 at the Bunker Hill Church of God, Buda, with the Rev. Robert Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Hopeland Cemetery, Buda, with military rites conducted by Buda American Legion Post 261. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Born Dec. 5, 1921, in Decatur, Iowa, to Charlie and Ruby (Surber) White, he married Edith Ilene Smyth Dec. 5, 1943, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Carol Sue (James) Harris of Princeton and Sally Jane (Dennis) Specht of Sheffield; one son, Charles Steven (Sue Ann) White of Sheffield; two brothers, Lester (Mary) White of Tacoma, Wash., and Robert (Dorothy) White of Moline; one sister, Juanita Rice of Rialto, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Laurie (Brett) Geuther, Mike (Chris) Skaggs, Jeremy Harris, Eric (Deirdre) White, Jody (Greg) Specht, Amanda (Scott) Zoske, Stephanie (Joe) Monier, Kala (Jake) Peterson, Chelsea DeVoss, Haley DeVoss and Angela (Ryan) Rediger; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lee, Harvey and Harold White; and two sisters, Maxine Funk and Iola Jameson. He was a 1941 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He was a signalman and signal inspector for 41 years for Burlington Northern Railroad. He served on the Buda Village Town Board. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Buda and Buda American Legion Post 261. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II, working on the railroads. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and traveling all over the United States. Memorials may be directed to the Buda Rescue Squad, Illinois Cancer Care (Dr. VuKov) and Bunker Hill Church of God. Honorary Pallbearers: Donald Downard, Bruce Johnson, Jack Bryant, Kenneth Krisher, Carl Adkison and Dan Dunn. The Grant-Johnson Funeral Home, Buda, is in charge of arrangements.
