Bill Monroe Smith

Bill Monroe Smith, 59, of Princeton, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at his home surrounded by his children.

Bill was born on December 18, 1966, in Princeton, the son of William “Chaz” Monroe Smith and Areminta “June” (Dorff) Smith. He graduated from Princeton High School with the Class of 1985.

Bill began working at Beck Oil Company at the age of 16 as a pump jockey and cashier. He dedicated more than 34 years to the company, building countless friendships along the way that became more like family. Through hard work, drive, and dedication, Bill rose through the ranks and eventually became President/CEO of the company. He loved pushing the envelope and developing new and creative ways of doing business. Bill was a visionary who was always on the cutting edge of his industry. He valued people and relationships above all else. For him, it never truly felt like work — he genuinely loved what he did.

Bill enjoyed doing anything that allowed him to spend time with family. As a child, he loved helping his dad work on his semi-truck when he was home, teasing his sister, and being with his mom in her salon. In his younger years, Bill had a deep passion for racing stock cars. Above all else, his greatest joy was being with his children. Whether coaching their sports teams, simply spending time together, or helping them start their lives, Bill treasured every moment with them. Some of his happiest memories were made working outdoors, playing cards, boating, and sharing life lessons with his kids.

He is survived by his two children, Jacob Smith of Princeton and Paige (Bryce) Johnson of South Carolina; one sister, Michelle “Shelly” (Scott) Simon of Naperville; one niece, Maia Simon and one nephew, Michael Simon.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents.

Private Graveside Services will be held at Mound Cemetery with Pastor Kurt Smith officiating.  A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 pm -4:00 pm on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Beck’s Professional Suites 850 East Thompson Street in Princeton, IL. Cremation Rites have been accorded.
