Bernard K. Martin

Bernard K. Martin, 96, of rural Wyanet passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at Liberty Village in Princeton.

Bernard was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Sheffield to William and Florence Martin, where he spent his childhood in Annawan until the seventh grade then moved north of Wyanet to the family farm, where he graduated high school. Shortly after high school, he spent four years in the Army Air Corps and married Benadine Thompson while in the service.

Bernard spent his life on the family farm, married for 69 years, and is well known for raising pure-bred Angus cattle. He was active in the Wyanet School Board, Bureau County Fair Board, Farm Bureau Extension, Catholic Church Board and the Angus Cattle Association. He loved to watch the Chicago Bears, watch pro golfing and rodeo bull riding. But, most of all he enjoyed the 60-plus years of his friendly Thursday night poker games.

Bernard is survived by his four children, Linda Grimmer of Kansas City, Jim Martin (Deb Lyle) of Wyanet, and Terry Martin and Dr. Jeff (Leanne) Martin of Princeton; seven grandchildren, Frank Freson of Longview, Texas, Sandy King of Kansas City, Matt Martin of Portland, Ore., Angie McCloud of Tremont, Nicole Martin of Antioch, Alan Martin of Augusta, Ga., Carl Martin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Benadine.

Friends will be welcomed from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Grant-Johnson Funeral Home in Princeton. The family will hold a private graveside ceremony.

Donations in Bernard’s honor, and flowers, will be directed to the St. Louis Catholic Church.
