Bernard "Bud" Harlow Schubring

Bernard "Bud" Harlow Schubring of Galva, Ill., passed away on Friday, March 26, 2010, in his home after a long illness. Bud was a World War II veteran, who at the age of 18 was severely wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He was awarded the Bronze Star and French Croix de Guerre for his bravery. He was born on June 13, 1925, in Madison, Wis., the son of Harlow and Bertha (Moksnes) Schubring. He married Colleen Drake in Dubuque, Iowa, on Jan. 1, 1946. He is formerly of Madison, Prairie du Sac and La Crosse, Wis. He also resided in his retirement in Eagle River, Wis., and Bradford, Ill. He and his wife spent their winters near Blythe, Calif., for many years. He is survived by his faithful wife of 64 years, Colleen Schubring. Also surviving are three sons, Mark (Carole) of Zion, Ill., Paul of Rolla, Mo., and John (Elsa) of Fairfield, Pa.; and three daughters, Susan (Ken) Gmeinder of Madison, Wis., Mary (Peter) McKean of Bradford, Ill., and Clare (Greg) Boyle of Milwaukee, Wis. He was the grandfather of 22 children and the great-grandfather of 13. He graduated from East High School and the University of Wisconsin; he also graduated from Madison Business College with a degree in business administration. He was a mail carrier in Madison and La Crosse, Wis., for 23 years. He was also a top salesman for American Automobile Association and District Manager of the office in La Crosse, Wis. Bernard was a lifetime member of the American Legion, the Purple Heart Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He helped form the Sauk Prairie-Roxbury Conference of St. Vincent de Paul. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bradford and St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Galva. Funeral services will be Monday, March 29, 2010, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bradford at 10 a.m., with Father Vien Van Do, Father John Thieryoung and Deacon John Holevoet officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today in the Grant-Johnson Funeral Home in Bradford, with the Rosary at 5 p.m. Burial will be in the St. John''s Cemetery, with military rites accorded by Bradford American Legion 445. Memorials may be directed to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bradford; St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Galva; or the Bradford Public Library.
