Grace Swearingen

Grace Schindler Swearingen, 89, of Bradford, IL, passed away peacefully in Hennepin, IL, on July 2, 2026.

Grace was born on October 20, 1936, to Charles and Lucille (Sturm) Schindler in their home in Valley, IL. She graduated from Bradford High School, Class of 1954. Grace married James “Jim” Swearingen on October 24, 1954, at Leet Methodist Church in Bradford. He preceded her in death on June 18, 2017.

Grace drove a school bus for Bradford School for over 25 years, and after that, she followed her true calling of working in the medical field. This allowed her to become an administrative assistant for doctors’ offices in Peoria, Lacon, and Bartonville.

She was a longtime member of Leet Memorial Methodist Church in Bradford, IL.

Grace’s interests outside of work were varied, including shopping, playing cards, being a fan of local and Chicago sports teams, and watching game shows. She was even known to cut a rug with her favorite dance partner, Skunky.

Above all else, the lights of Grace’s life were her grandchildren. She adored them and would do anything for them. She will be greatly missed by all of them, as well as her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Kimberly Rusesky of Gurnee, IL; Sally Swearingen Johnson of East Peoria, IL; and T.J. (Clara) Swearingen of Mt. Dora, FL. Grace is also survived by eight grandchildren: Tresa, Brooke, Jessica, Thomas, Christopher, J.R., Cooper, and Kiara. In addition, she leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; her daughter, Michelle; her brother, Charles; and her son-in-law, Tamico.

A memorial visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Grant-Johnson Funeral Home in Bradford, IL. Private graveside services will be held at Osceola Grove Cemetery with Pastor Dan Wright officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded.
