Dr. Barry Wayne Lord, 77, of Princeton, IL formerly of Lexington, KY, formerly of San Diego CA went to be with our Lord on March 6, 2025.
Barry was born on April 16, 1947 in Richmond, CA the son of Vernon Wayne Wood and La Jolla Scott. He married the love of his life Margaret “Peggy” Ann Cunningham on July 1, 1972 in Lemon Grove, CA. And is the father to his son, Brian Lord. Barry was a strong follower of Jesus who led him throughout his life.
Barry graduated with his PhD from Southern California Seminary where he later became the Dean of Behavioral Science from 1999 until his retirement in 2013. While also working at the school Barry worked as a licensed psychotherapist counseling many during his 30 years of service. Prior to working in education, Barry had many different careers, from being a Senior Social worker for mental health in San Diego County, to working for the Salvation army running their rehabilitation ministry. Later he was in private practice as a therapist and even, on the side, ran M2 ministry, matching men in churches to minister to men in prison. He worked in many other professions beginning as a police officer and County Sheriff in the San Diego, CA area. Barry enjoyed public speaking and educating the public on various topics, but most of all he loved his family, his wife, his son, his daughter-in-law and four grandchildren
Barry was a foundational leader at Southern California Seminary, Barry paved the way for countless biblical, licensed therapists and psychologists, leaving a profound impact on the field of Christian counseling. His presence, stories, and warm smile filled every room he entered, and his influence continues through the many professionals he mentored—those who carry his wisdom and “Barryisms” into their careers, ministries, and families around the world.
Barry constantly lived his life trying to make an impact on the community. His passion came from his love and faith in Jesus. Barry lived the calling of 2 Corinthians 5:20, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”
He is survived by his wife Peggy Lord of Princeton, son, Brian (Jennifer) Lord of Princeton; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Hannah, Matthew and Rebekah Lord; one brother, Dwight Ison, one sister, Jane Slighton and one niece, Nicole Dooley.
