Scott A. Darnell 59 of Tallahassee Florida passed away Monday September 25th, 2023, at his home.

Scott was born April 23rd, 1964, in Peoria, Illinois. He is the son of James and Alma (Hodges) Darnell.

Scott has been with his wife Kathy Connell for 28 years, they worked together and lived together and took care of each other in times of need.

Scott leaves behind his father James Darnell of Onalaska Wisconsin. Scott was grateful for his father for teaching him how to be a great man, respect others and to help when it is needed. James and Scott love baseball and became die-hard St. Louis Cardinal fans.

Scott also leaves behind a nephew: Eric Smith of Concord, North Carolina. Scott was so proud of Eric and the choices he has made in his life.

Scott was preceded in death by his mother Alma (Hodges) Darnell and his sister Cindy Baker.

Scott joined the Air National Guard and received his college degree.

He then joined the Dane County Sheriff's Office as a Deputy, where he worked as a road deputy. Scott worked very hard to become a Tactical Response Operator with the Sheriff’s Office.

Scott moved to Tallahassee Florida and joined the Tallahassee Police Department. Scott again worked very hard and made his way into the Detective Division. Scott became a burglary investigator, then worked his way to the Sex Crimes Division. Scott then became a highly respected Homicide detective and solved many high-profile crimes, even the murder of Dale Green a Tallahassee Police Sergeant that was murdered in the line of duty.

Scott eventually retired from the Tallahassee Police Department and started his own Private Investigator business called Specialized investigation.

Scott retired from the P.I. business and decided to write a book under a pseudonym name. The book was called The Phoenix Working Group which was published.

In his down time, Scott designed a license plate bracket, and was able to get it a patten for it. He sold several models.

He also designed T-shirts for - Florida State University Seminoles, Wisconsin Badgers, Tallahassee Police Department and Dane County Sheriff’s Office. These shirts were sold online.

Scott loved to watch the Food Network and learned how to become an amazing cook. Scott would cook for the Tallahassee Police Departments Thanksgiving annual dinner, he made his "famous corn bread stuffing" and his smoked cheese mash potatoes. He cooked for over 15 years and would feed over 100 Officers, EMT's Sheriff's Deputies, and Firefighters each Thanksgiving.

Scott was a great dog Dad, he raised 7 dogs that loved him with their whole hearts. Scott was so proud of his dogs he would send tons of videos and photos to friends and family.

Scott will truly be missed for all he did for everyone.

  1. Scott and I grew up together in Peoria and attended Thomas Jefferson K-8. We were in the same class all nine years! We had many good times growing up and I am saddened to hear of Scott’s passing. My heartfelt condolences to the Darnell family. RIP
